Anne Possnack Obituary

ANNE N. POSSNACK, 100 of Weirton, WV passed away Sunday March 19, 2017 at the Weirton Geriatric Center. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 17, 1916, the tenth of eleven children, to Maria and Nicholas Savastone.

Her father moved to Weirton to become employed at Weirton Steel Company, and Anne attended local schools, graduating 5th in her class in 1935. The Depression years halted her plans for college, and she took various jobs at Keystone Shoe Store, then Mantica's Pharmacy, Anas Theater, and Lincoff Jewelry. In 1940 she married John Alexander Possnack, with whom she happily raised three children.

In 1957, Mary H. Weir approached the Weirton Women's Club in order to donate 10,000 books that she had purchased for establishing a new library in Weirton and Anne was hired to process, catalog, and shelve the books. She remained an employee of the library for 43 years, serving in many capacities.

Anne was very active in church activities as a member of the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, serving as an officer in the Ladies Altar Society, as choir director, and as a Sunday School teacher. Along with being a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, she enjoyed traveling to Florida, Arizona, and California to visit children and other family.

Anne's three children are, David Possnack (Judi) of Cypress, CA, Daniel Possnack (Susette) of Ontario, CA, and the late Martha Jon Ghenne (3-7-2011). She had four grandchildren, Nicholas Possnack, the late Natalie Possnack, Marjorie Ghenne McLaughlin, and Jessica Ghenne Kefer; five great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Annette Savastone; nephews, Michael, Thomas, and David Savastone.

Visitation will be Friday March 24, 2017 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 608 Colliers Way, Weirton, WV. The Very Reverend Fr. Paul Suda will preside. Interment will follow at St. Nicholas Orthodox Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to STEEL & WOLFE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., Weirton, WV.
