Ava Michelle Woodland, a radiant and beloved 5-year-old girl, gained her angel wings on Friday, August 8, 2025, at UPMC Children’s Hospital. Born on July 30, 2020, in Steubenville, Ohio, she was the cherished daughter of her loving parents, Cayla Wharton and Evan Woodland.
Ava was a bright light in the lives of everyone who had the joy of knowing her. Known for her sass, sweetness, and endless silliness, she had a remarkable way of bringing smiles and laughter wherever she went. She was truly one of a kind — a little girl whose vibrant spirit left a lasting imprint on all who loved her. A true girly girl at heart, Ava adored dresses, heels, baby dolls, Barbies, and anything that sparkled — just like she did. Her creativity knew no bounds; she loved arts and crafts, and she lit up every room with her singing and dancing. Since she was just six months old, Ava attended The Children’s Academy in Weirton, where she was nurtured by devoted teachers and caregivers and made many precious memories.
In her passing, Ava became a true hero. Through the gift of organ donation, she gave the most selfless gift of all — the gift of life. Ava, and her parent’s, incredible bravery and generosity have already changed the lives of others, a legacy far greater than her years. Her spirit lives on in every life she’s touched.
Though her time here was far too short, Ava's love, laughter, and sparkle will live on in the hearts of those who love her — forever five, and forever cherished.
Ava is survived by her loving Mom, Cayla Wharton of Weirton; Dad, Evan Woodland of Weirton; Great grandma (maternal) Martha Montelione “Mammie” of Steubenville; Grandparents (maternal) Tina Matijevich “Grandma” and Daniel Matijevich “Grandpa” of Weirton; Grandparents (paternal) Melinda Woodland “Yia Yia” and Joseph Fulciniti “Pap” of Weirton; Aunt and Uncle (maternal) Dawn Homan and Randy Homan of Belmont; Cousin (maternal) Sawyer Homan of Belmont; Aunt (paternal) Courtney Woodland of Toronto; Cousins (paternal) Carter Blue of Weirton, Cameron Gibson of Toronto; Great Aunt (maternal) Michelle Rawson of Weirton; Aunts, Uncles, Cousins & Besties, Heather, Chelsea, Sayde, Garrett, Tony, Chelsey, Matt, Asterria, Drew, Max, Mylan, Aiden, Conor, Oliver, Daisy, Jamie Lynn and Drew, Destini, and Aubrey; and fur babies, Sunny, Stanley, Smokey, Honey, Louie, Daphne and Mo.
