DANIEL WARREN JONES, Sr., 95 of Weirton, WV passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 8, 2017 at Country Club Manor, Steubenville, OH. He was born March 8, 1921 in East Liverpool, OH. He was the son of the late Warren Arthur and Mary Ellen Creal Jones. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Avis D. McIntire Jones(6-21-2011); brothers, John J. and Hugh R. Jones; sisters, Mary E. and Helen M. Jones.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Daniel W. Jones, Jr.; daughters, Linda Ellen Jones, both of Weirton, WV, Jeri J. Williams(Ronald M.) of Belington, WV; grandsons, Kenneth L. Jones of Lebanon, ME, Timothy A. Williams of Martinsburg, WV, David M. Williams of Belington, WV; granddaughter Carrie L. Williams of Martinsburg, WV; sister, Margaret A. Jones of Fenton, MI.
Daniel was a member of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church. He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School; attended John Carroll University on an athletic scholarship. He enlisted in the USMC in June 1942, and was selected to serve at the 8th & I Marine Corps Barracks in Washington, DC, which at the time was responsible for security & ceremonial services for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Subsequently, he saw action at Okinawa with the 29th Marines 6th Division, the Ryukyu Islands and the occupation of China. Daniel retired from Weirton Steel, National Steel Division after 38 years and was a member of the 25 year club. He was a charter member of the Tri-State Marine Corps Club, serving as chaplain for many years; lifetime member of Weirton VFW Post No.2716. He was scoutmaster for Troop no.31 for 15 years, remained active with the Fort Steuben Council of BSA for many years. He was also the recipient of many scouting awards including the Silver Beaver and Good Shepherd Emblem. He was a member of the Hancock County and WV State Historical Societies, and instrumental in the reconstruction of the Peter Tarr Furnace on Kings Creek. He also enjoyed his service as president of the Hancock County Preservation & Landmarks Committee as well as his many years of membership with Cove Valley Lodge No.380, IOOF.
Visitation will be Saturday February 11, 2017 11:00 a.m. until time of the funeral at 12:00 p.m. at STEEL & WOLFE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 380 Penco Road, Weirton, WV. Hospice Chaplain George Romage will preside. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens where military funeral honors will be provided by the Tri-State Marine Corps Club.
