Donald T. Mentzer, Sr.

DONALD T. MENTZER, SR., 84 of Weirton, WV passed away Wednesday March 22, 2017 at The Carriage Inn, Steubenville, OH. He was born April 3, 1932 in Weirton, WV. He was the son of the late Thomas M. and Henrietta Monseau Mentzer. Don was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Marguerite F. DiDonato Mentzer (1-12-2011); son, Mark David Mentzer; sisters, Elizabeth Ferguson, Beverly Hinchee and Doris Robertson.

Don was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, Holy Name society, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post No.2716, FOP Lodge No.84, US Army veteran/Korean War, past president Weirton Hts. VFD, past pres/vp/sec/treas.of WV Municipal League, life member Oakland VFD. Don was employed with the Weirton Police Dept. 1952-1978, Weirton Steel Corp. Plant protection/fire dept. 1979-1981. He served as Mayor of the City of Weirton, 1979-1988.

Surviving are his son, Donald T. Mentzer, Jr. (Karen) of Weirton, WV; sister, Georgette Henry (Dee) of Robinson Township, PA; grandson, Mark David Mentzer of Weirton, WV.

Visitation will be Friday March 24, 2017 1:00-3:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. at STEEL & WOLFE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 380 Penco Road, Weirton, WV. Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weirton, WV with Reverend Larry Dorsch as celebrant. Entombment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. Police/Fire/Military honors will be rendered by the Weirton Police, Weirton Fire, and American Legion Post No.10 honor guards.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are urged to the Weirton Police Department K9 unit, protective vest fund, 200 Municipal Plaza, Weirton, WV 26062.
