DOROTHY “JEAN” BURDETTE, 99, of Weirton, WV, departed this life on Sunday, May 12, 2024, on Mother’s Day. Jean was born in Steubenville. Ohio on September 28, 1924 to Desmond John O’Brien and Lillian Beatrice (Brennen) O’Brien. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 35 years Harry Burdette, mother Lillian, brothers, James, Hugh, and Donald, and son, David.
She is survived by son, Robert (Nancy), grandsons Christopher and Zachery (Anya), great-granddaughter Heidi, and great-grandson Luke, daughter Nancy (Wayne), daughter-in-law Linda (Virtue) Burdette, cousin Margie Menzel, numerous nephews and nieces, and close family friend Carol Burchfield. Jean was a member of St Thomas Episcopal Church for over 40 years.
During WW II, Jean worked as a Rosie the Riveter for a plane manufacturer in Cleveland before moving back to Weirton to marry the man of her dreams. Harry and Jean wed in Norfolk, VA on September 15, 1944 on the Naval base.
Having her lost husband of over 30 years in 1978, Jean ventured from Weirton to Bradenton, Florida. Always wanting to be a nurse, she enrolled in nursing school at age 52. Jean went from stay at home Mom to career nurse and spent 22 years in the field. Jean caught the travel bug in her 70s and traveled throughout Europe, South America, the Caribbean to name a few.
With sincere gratitude the family thanks Dr. Sanjay Gupta of Weirton for his sincere caring through the years. Special thanks to Jean’s neighbors and friends at Heritage Village in Steubenville and the staff at Serra Manor.
No services are planned at this time. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Weirton, WV.
