Joseph Meador Obituary

JOSEPH E. MEADOR, 93, of Weirton, WV, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023, at
Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, after a brief illness. He was born March 9, 1930, in
Jumping Branch, WV, son of the late Prince Lee and Sylvia Ann (Meadows) Meador. He was also
preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Ornell E. (Bauman) Meador (2020);
brothers, Lester L., Darrell D., Roy, Dewey R., Chester R., and Van E. Meador; sisters, Mary
Frances Meador, Irma Jean Maddy and Goldie Mae Lilly; brother and sister-in laws, Jonathan
"Dott"; Lilly, Macie Meador, Helen Meador, and Carolyn Meador. He was also preceded in
death by one nephew, Chester R. “Chuck” Meador, Jr.
 
Joseph was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Wellsburg Chapter #23
Order of the Eastern Star, Weirton Lodge No. 171 A.F. &  A.M., Wheeling Commandery No. 1
Knight’s Templar, Wheeling Union Chapter No. 1, Osiris Shriners, Northern Panhandle Shrine
Club, Wheeling Lodge #9 I.O.O.F., American Legion Post No. 10, NRA, and AARP. His favorite
charities were Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed
Veterans of America, Boys Town, Tunnel for Towers, Shriner’s Hospital, and St. Jude. Joseph
was a Sergeant in the US Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. After returning from Korea, he
worked at Weirton Steel as a motor inspector foreman in the Blast Furnace.   In his younger
years, he enjoyed hunting, especially with his brothers,  playing golf, gardening, woodworking,
and "tinkering" in his garage.  Joe was a great storyteller, loved to travel and talk to people, and
to just be out and enjoy nature.  He was an avid Pittsburgh Penguin and West Virginia
Mountaineer fan. 
He is survived by daughters, Lorna E. (Richard) Young , Sherry J. Meador and Jonell L. Meador,
all of Weirton; brothers, Donzie D. Meador and Willie D. (Nancy) Meador; sister, Anna Lee
(Edwin) Massey; sister-in-law Cindy Meador and brother-in-law Richard Maddy; and several
nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 7, 2023, from 3 pm to 6 pm at Steel & Wolfe Funeral
Home, 380 Penco Road, Weirton, where the funeral will take place Friday, December 8 at 11
am, with Reverend Mark Mayer presiding. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial
Gardens, where military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post No. 10 and the US
Army Honor Guards.
