Joseph Meyer, Jr. Obituary

JOSEPH H. MEYER, JR., 90 of Weirton, WV passed away Friday August 18, 2017 at Weirton Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was born February 22, 1927 in Wellsburg, WV. He was the son of the late Joseph and Della Dowden Meyer.

Following his school years in Wellsburg he worked for Eagle Manufacturing. While trying to join the Navy he was drafted by the Army during the Korean War and served in Germany. Following his discharge in 1953, he began a career at Weirton Steel Corporation in the plant protection division. He enjoyed his work as a "mill cop", rising to the rank of Captain of the force in 1975, before retiring in 1984. On New Year's Day 1948, he met the love of his life, Genevieve Nadine Thompson. They married on March 26, 1951 at St. Paul's Catholic Church. This past March, Joe and Gen celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, just a few weeks before her passing on April 12, 2017.Their family grew November 1954 with the birth of their only child, Paula Jo, and the addition of their son-in-law, Thomas Stout in May 1983.

Joe was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Moose Lodge. He attended St. Paul's Church. In his youth, he played basketball and softball and was known to be an excellent dancer. He and his wife spent several years assisting the Weir High Band Parents. In retirement, Joe and Gen were always together and enjoyed a love for their gardens, travels to WV mountains and the NC shore, stops at McDonalds to visit old friends, and numerous trips to Morgantown. Their joy was in helping family.

Joseph Meyer was everyone's friend and knew no stranger. No matter the situation, it was always much better when "Joe was there". He treated his wife and daughter like a treasure, and all family members as his own. He was generous with his time, abilities, and wisdom. As his nephew said; "he was loved dearly for his unbounded kindness, desert-dry wit, and calm intelligence". He will be missed and forever in our hearts.

Along with his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Catherine Gaudio, Mary Stidd; infant brother Joseph Meyer; in laws, Myrtle and Hugh Thompson.

Surviving are his daughter, Dr. Paula Jo Stout (Dr. Thomas Stout) of Morgantown, WV; sister, Ruth Cusick (Don) of Wellsburg, WV; numerous nieces and nephews; grand puppies, Odie, Gracie, and Zuko.
