Leonard Salerno Obituary

Leonard D. Salerno, 99, of Weirton,WV.,died peacefully in his sleep on April 8th,2016 at the Weirton Geriatric Center. He was born on July 31, 1916 in New Castle,PA.,and was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helen Salerno on May 27,2007.

He is survived by his daughter Joyce (Ron) Wilson of Weirton,WV.,daughter Jennifer (George) Garton of Rio Rancho,NM.,and son Rick Salerno of Weirton,WV. Also surviving are grandchildren Robin (Jeff) Rokisky, Ron Wilson,Jr., Jeff (Wendy) Wilson, Sean Wilson, Shannon (Scott) Leifer, Coleen (Troy) Villarreal, Matthew Salerno, and eleven great grandchildren.

Leonard was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was elected as a Hancock County delegate to the Silver Hair Legislature and was also elected to serve on the Hancock County democratic executive committee. He and Senator Robert Byrd had a great personal relationship. The senator phoned Leonard often to talk about the needs of Hancock and Brooke residents. Senator Byrd also helped Leonard bring the "war on poverty" to Weirton by helping him to organize the Community Action program in Hancock County. Leonard was particularly interested in the need for assisted living facilities for seniors before they became a reality in our area. His concern for the public speaking ability of young students caused him to spend several years as a volunteer in two elementary schools. In 1997 he took fresh produce to the residents of seniors in subsidized housing and encouraged Weirton residents to give their surplus produce to seniors; the Knights of Columbus adopted this idea as a community service project.Leonard was a veteran of the US Army and was honorably discharged on June 30,1945.

There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church 229 California Avenue,Weirton,WV., on Friday, April 15,2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Manuel Gelido officiating.Online condolences may be addressed to www.steelandwolfe.com.
