Mary Ellen Groves

Mary Ellen Groves, 89, of Weirton, West Virginia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

Born on December 6, 1936, in Brown, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late David Guy Shrader and Lena Reed Shrader Bennett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of many years, Paul Ray Groves, who passed away in 2012, and her brother, Dennis Guy Shrader.

Mary Ellen was a remarkable woman whose faith, musical talent, and dedication to her community touched countless lives. She graduated as Valedictorian of the Wallace High School Class of 1954 in Wallace, West Virginia. Gifted with exceptional musical ability, she faithfully served as an organist and choir director in several churches throughout her life. She was a Charter Member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she served as organist and choir director for many years. Most recently, she was a devoted member of Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church, where she continued to glorify the Lord through her music as the church organist.

Professionally, Mary Ellen began her career at Weirton General Hospital before pursuing a successful career in real estate with Barone Realty. She served as Director of the Weirton Area Board of Realtors and was recognized for her outstanding professionalism as Realtor of the Year. In 2012, she was honored as Best Realtor in the Daily Times Readers' Choice Awards.

Beyond her career, Mary Ellen was active in many civic and social organizations. She was a past member of the Weirton Women's Club, a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, and proudly shared her love of music as a member of the Sounds of Pittsburgh Sweet Adelines Chorus.

Above all, Mary Ellen cherished her family. She is survived by her loving sons, Douglas Groves (Rosann), David Groves (Leslie), Daniel Groves (Dianne), and Donald Groves (Darcee). She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Amber, Amanda (Marcus Wells), Andrea (Crispin Havener), Chad (Andjela), James, Shaylee, and Deedra; her great-grandchildren, Marcus Jr. and Rene; and eagerly awaited the arrival of her newest great-grandchild, baby Luka; and dear special friend, George Pohlman.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, July 22, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 noon at Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home, 380 Penco Road, Weirton, with Rev. Bill Stout officiating. Interment will follow beside her beloved husband, Paul, at Highland Hills Memorial Gardens in Follansbee.
