Michael Mercer Obituary

MICHAEL EARL “MIKE” MERCER, 59, of Weirton, WV, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 7, 2025, while undergoing a pacemaker procedure at WVU Medicine in Weirton.

Born March 13, 1966, in Alliance, Ohio, Mike was a happy-go-lucky soul known for his sweet nature, kindness, and unwavering willingness to help others. He graduated from Brooke High School in 1985 and went on to hold many roles throughout his career, most recently serving as the Fleet Manager at Lauttamus Communications in Weirton.
With over 40 years of dedication in public service, Mike most recently was a Sgt with the Hancock Co. Sheriff's Reserves in WV and formerly served as a Pennsylvania State Constable. That wasn't all that encompassed the essence of Mike, he was a Firefighter to his core, proudly serving with Weirton Co. 1, Weirton Co. 2, City of Weirton Volunteer Division, New Cumberland Fire Dept, Midway VFD and finished his fire service career at Oakland District Volunteer Fire Dept. Mike also shared countless hours and made numerous lifelong friends while serving as a Certified EMT with Weirton Area Ambulance and Rescue Squad.

Mike was a proud member of Moose Lodge 688 and found joy in simple pleasures—camping, fishing, and hunting—especially at Austin Lake and Tomlinson Run State Park. A loving and supportive dad, he took pride in teaching his boys and sharing his love for the outdoors; but more importantly by sharing his love of serving others through public service. Mike also adored his cats: Kato, Bruce, and Smokey, and nurtured his Christian faith as a member of the First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oran Mercer and Nancy Thomas Mercer Sweat.
Mike lived a life of service, compassion, and warmth. His infectious smile, generous heart, and genuine love for people will never be forgotten.

Mike will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Devin and Jordan Mercer (girlfriend Kenzy Collins); his fiancée, Melany Bever; the mother of his children, Kolleen Schutz Mercer; and his stepson, Ryan (Liliya) Truax. He is also survived by his brother, Gary (Marla) Mercer his half-brother, Oran Mercer; sisters, Sherry Tomasi and Terry Minger; half-sisters, Kim (Tony) Carducci, Kathy (Mike) Telles, and Regina Vandeborne; as well as nieces and nephews Nikki Tibbs, Ricky Anderson, Kristan Hawkins, and Emily Leonard.

Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 15th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, at Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home, 380 Penco Rd, Weirton, where the service will be Saturday, Aug. 16th at 11am, with Rev. Judith Bartlett-Tomes presiding. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
