Norma Jean Thompson Obituary

October 7, 1930 – December 20, 2024

Mrs. Norma Jean Thompson, 94, of Colliers, WV – a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother quietly took the hand of the Lord in hers and left her country life for a life with Him beyond the horizon.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, George V. Thompson, 30 September 1980, her parents – George Washington Yates, Nadine Elizabeth (Sims) Yates, brothers – Melvin A. Yates, Neil E. Yates and 3 sisters – Marian Gayle Kafton, Carol Ann Yates and Helen Ruth Yates. Also, her daughter, Joan E. Thompson-Poulin who died last Christmas season. Finally, her grandchild, Mark D. Thompson, in March 2022.

Left to cherish her memory are her brothers – Paul D. Yates (Mary Kay), Harry C. Yates (Helen), and William G. Yates (Nancy). Her devoted children – Virgil Thompson, Joyce Thompson-Bucci, Margery Thompson, Norma Jean (Jeanie) Thompson, James Thompson, Deborah Klash (Robert), Loraine Martinovich (Melvin) and Pamela Mazaris.

She adored her 11 grandchildren, Julz Harris (Cody), Carie Roman (Irving), Nic Mazaris, Stacey Conley (Gary), Dr. Taylor Thompson (fiancé Ryan), Ashlee Sacdalan (Jodi), Jerrod Rowlett, Amanda Thompson (fiancé Frank), Lucas Thompson, Andrew Thompson and Andre’ Poulin (Sara).

She had 10 precious great grandchildren and 2 precious great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Thompson enjoyed traveling and music. She was a 40’s gal who raised her children in the 50’s and 60’s. An avid reader with rules about page turning, she was a girl scout leader, a Past Grand Noble of the Naomi Colliers Rebekah Lodge, a lifetime member of the Elks and Order of the Eastern Star. She retired at age 85 from customer service. A menagerie of animals loved to cross into her yard – deer, groundhog, turkey and her favorite squirrel with his beautiful tail. He delighted to land on a stool placed on the porch with his treats. She had huge gardens and canned everything. A simple life. We loved her so much. We will miss her.
