SHIRLEY J. MADDEN, 81 of Weirton, WV passed away Thursday May 11, 2017 at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA from pulmonary fibrosis, which she developed in 2015. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Helen Virtue Wood. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Craig Wood, Sr.; longtime significant other, Jerome Connell. Formerly married to John J. Madden in 1959, divorced in 1989.
Surviving are her daughter, Cheryl Lynn Madden (Brown) of Coraopolis, PA; grandchildren, Devon Brown and Skylar Brown; sister, Donna June Carey of Weirton, WV; nephews, Criag Wood, Jr. (Connie) of Carnegie, PA, Keith Wood of Wellsburg, WV, James R. Carey (Alice) of Chicago, IL, Stephen D. Carey (Cynthia) of Charlotte, NC, Bruce R. Carey of Weirton, WV; several great nieces and nephews.
Shirley was a 1954 Follansbee High School graduate; worked at Weirton Steel Company. She later worked as a Medical Transcriptionist at Weirton Medical Center and later as the Medical Staff Coordinator at the former St. John Medical Center; member of the First Christian Church, having served as a deacon. She enjoyed golf, visiting Oglebay Park, and activities with her family and friends. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, they always were number one in her life.
A memorial service will be held Sunday May 21, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 3252 Main Street, Weirton, WV with Reverend Kevin L. Bowers presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family is respectfully asking for donations toward the funeral costs.
