Open to All West Virginia & Pennsylvania Veterans & Spouses

Burial in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies is open to all PA Veterans military of the armed forces and actice military who have met a minimum active duty service requirement and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

A Veteran's spouse, widow or widower, minor dependent children, and under certain conditions, unmarried adult children with disabilities may also be eligible for burial. Eligible spouses and children may be buried even if they predecease the Veteran.

Members of the reserve components of the armed forces who die while on active duty or who die while on training duty, or were eligible for retired pay, may also be eligible for burial.

Veterans Burial Benefits for Spouse

Burial benefits available for spouses and dependents buried in the Cemetery of the Alleghenies include burial with the Veteran, perpetual care, and the spouse or dependent's name and date of birth and death will be inscribed on the Veteran's headstone, at no cost to the family. Eligible spouses and dependents may be buried, even if they predecease the Veteran.


Veterans Cremation Interment Benefits

Cremated remains can be buried or inurned in the Cemetery of the Alleghenies in the same manner and with the same honors as casketed remains.  If you've selected cremation, there are multiple options available. For example, cremated remains may be interred in an in-ground gravesite or in a columbarium.

We will assist the Veteran's family will making funeral or cremation arrangements and make sure all documentation is taken care of.  We will also contact the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies Scheduling Office to schedule the burial or inurnment. Any item or service obtained from Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home and Cremation Services will be at the family's expense.

National Cemetery of the Alleghenies is the only active National Veterans Cemetery in the Ohio Valley.

The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies covers 292 acres in Cecil Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania approximately 20 miles  southwest of Pittsburgh.

The cemetery was dedicated on October 9, 2005 by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs' National Cemetery Administration and is one of the newest cemeteries in the National Cemetery system. The first burials took place on August 15, 2005. It was constructed on farmland and contains a small farm cemetery with graves dating to the late 18th Century. When fully completed, it will provide over 100,000 burial spaces. The cemetery spans 292 acres of land and is open to visitors daily from sunrise to sunset.

You can apply to find out in advance if you can be buried in any VA national cemetery. This is called a pre-need determination of eligibility—and it can help make the burial planning process easier for your family members in their time of need.  Any local Hancock or Brooke County, WV or Washington County, PA Veteran is eligible.
